Ways to Rock the Sneaker Trend this Summer

Sole Searching: Finding the top five coolest (and comfiest) sneaker trends of the summer

The beauty of trends lies in the mortality of the fad. Streetwear shoes went from classy to comfortable (when we realized bunions are really gross), and urban fashion combines both class and practicality to provide a plethora of streetwear styles (both affordable and budget breaking). Thanks to Kanye’s questionable morals, the slow decline of Yeezys has left more room at the top for other shoe possibilities. (Little did we know the wedge sneaker was still in).

Let us take a moment to recognize our veterans

  1. Uggs
  2. Flats (fortunately)
  3. Jelly shoes (unfortunately)
  4. Thigh-high boots
  5. Clear heels
  6. The gladiator sandal

If you’re looking for 4 ways to rock the sneaker trend this summer in comfortable and groovy shoes, keep reading because we’re going to cover some of the most notable recruits:

  • Classic trends
  • The “dad” trend
  • High + low top sneaker trends
  • And more!
  1. The Classic White Sneaker

Nothing beats the classic low-top sneaker. Showcase your style through the thousands of white sneaker options.

This classic white sneaker can dress up or dress down a classic comfortable outfit. Image courtesy of Adidas.

Fashion fads have made it to the top of the board only to make their way to the ground when a new design pops up. Unlike the flare jean and the Croc, the notorious white sneaker is here to stay. Something about its simplicity and neutrality keeps people interested. The white low-top found its popularity through the traditional Ked, which first came out in the early 1900s as the first rubber-soled shoe. Adidas slipped into the trend and released its Adidas Superstars in the 70s. Going back to the basics, practical, fashionable trainers or slip ons can be worn with any outfit–vibrant or not–to dress down an outfit.

How To Style

For a classic neutral look, pair white sneakers with blue jeans and a crisp white button down. Want to add a pop of color? Pair your outfit with vibrant jewelry or striped socks.

  1. The “Dad Shoe”

The 80s introduced a new age of electronic dance music, blockbuster movies, and of course, the chunky dad shoe.

Who wouldn’t want the option to cook a burger or run a 5k in the same hour?

Image Courtesy of Man of Many

The infamous chunky shoe peaked in popularity in the 80s and had a resurgence in recent years. Thanks to the original chunky athletic shoe, dad shoes were able to find their own platform (pun intended) as a chic tennis shoe (finally a sneaker we can wear with jeans).

Channeling height and functionality to anyone wanting to showcase their shoe game, these dad shoes have been worn by a plethora of characters.

King of the cookout Adam Sandler effortlessly pulls off the dad sneaker with the infamous shin-length basketball shorts and oversized tee.

How to Style

Princess Diana rocks the dad shoe look paired with an oversized sweatshirt and spandex.

Easily the most infamous dad shoe look, Chunky white shoes look best when paired with long white socks, an oversized crew neck, and spandex (or shin-length basketball shorts) for a comfy and practical errand-day look.

  1. The “Ugly but Cute” Sneaker

Why do we like the things that we like?

The new bedazzled Gucci shoe is elevated by shiny diamonds. The shoe is pink, teal, white and brown with leather diamond straps around the front of the shoe.

The glamorous new Gucci sneaker is sure to blind anyone who catches a glimpse of them.

Gucci’s new (stylish?) leather-wrapped bedazzled sneakers are just crazy enough to become the next sensation. With fashion design icons like Georgio Armani, Ralph Lauren, and Christopher Kane taking advantage of the fashion industry and its wild consumers, they sure have caught our attention.

Combining the practicality of a sneaker, and the glamor of a heel, this shoe falls under the “ugly shoe trend” which is currently thriving right underneath designer Christopher Kane’s sneaker heel and platform Croc, which I do admit fulfills my childhood love of unreasonably shiny shoes. They just might be ridiculous enough to invest in now… This too, shall pass.

How to Style

Its crystal clear: The bedazzled sneaker must be worn with a just-as-crazy outfit. Seen strictly on the streets of New York, this shoe has been seen paired with rainbow garments for an anything-but-classic style.

A Special Shoutout

The Big Red Boot requires style and confidence to rock on the streets of NYC.

Imitating Astro Boy’s look from the 50s Japanese series, MSCHF’s Big Red Boot satisfies the child in us all. Released in the beginning of this year, you could buy the Big Red Boot for the low low price of $350. If you weren’t lucky enough to grow up watching the hit series, these boots may remind you similarly of Dora the Explorer, The Smurfs, Puss in Boots or Ronald McDonald.

How to Style

Clearly, these shoes deserve the spotlight. Best paired with a casual natural outfit like a skirt or baggy jeans, your feet are sure to catch anyone’s attention. What do you think…could you pull off the look?

  1. The High Top

Converse: The immortal high top

Hightop platform converse can be styled with everyday clothes to give you boosted height (and boosted confidence).

Converse, the everlasting sneaker, started as the original “Converse All Star” in the 50s. Beginning as basketball shoes meant for quality and comfort, Converse became the sponsor of the 1984 Olympics, which saw Team America win wearing the renowned shoe.

Later, after Curt Cobain rocked Converse in the 90s, the shoe company partnered with the singer to release their Curt Cobain Limited Edition All Star High Top along with other partnerships like The Simpsons, Carhartt, Metallica, and Comme Des Garçons.

Converse commercials in the 80s utilized celebrity endorsement to market their All Star sneaker as a basketball shoe.

How to Style

The classic high top sneaker works best with a blue jean t-shirt combo. Of course with converse, the dirtier the better.

  1. The Low Top

Rest assured, cavemen and cavewomen, your wide feet are in fact not one in a million.

Hey Dudes can be worn with low rise socks or no socks at all (if you don’t sweat too much).

Hey Dudes

The newly introduced lightweight and airy Hey Dudes are a great alternative to narrow low top sneakers (for the sweaty footed). These eco-friendly and recyclable shoes took off in America, Europe, South America, and Eastern Asia, gaining popularity in 2018 as a wide-toe shoe.

Lems shoes have a wide toe box and a “barefoot” design for ultimate foot comfort.

Lems breathable shoes can be worn with or without socks best for allowing flexibility and comfort. Taking off in 2018, Lems shoes promote improved posture, reduced injuries, better balance, foot strength, better recovery times, reduced hammertoes and bunions, improved agility, and increased circulation. Yeah, they look a bit funny but your feet will thank you tomorrow.

How to Style

Depending on how you style them, Hey Dudes and Lems can look comfortable and stylish, or wide (and somewhat odd). Paired with khakis and a polo, these low top shoes have provided not only comfort and stability but most importantly air flow and circulation.

The Groundwork

Just like anything in the fashion industry, any of these shoes may go out of style in the next year. The bottom line is… you can rock any look if you’re comfortable. Invest in the best and save your feet from humiliation by following the top five most fashionable shoe choices of 2023.

Timeless Jewelry Pieces from AUrate NY

Thursday, February 28th, 2019

I’m a classic kind of girl when it comes to jewelry and I like to keep it simple. So when AUrate NY was kind enough to let me choose the pieces I’d like, I was overjoyed! There are so many beautiful pieces to choose from on their site and each piece is meticulously crafted to last a lifetime. I chose this gorgeous vermeil inverse cuff and this chic obelisk pendant necklace. They were sent in a gorgeously wrapped box and I thought I’d show you how amazing they look in person.

The bracelet looks so stylish and plus it’s adjustable! I can see myself pairing it with a lot of little black dresses. And the necklace would be perfect especially with V-neck tshirts or V-neck dresses. It’s a piece that calls for a double take when you see it! I can see myself wearing it to both casual and fancy parties!

AUrate NY is one of my favorite jewelry companies because they make feminine, chic and timeless pieces that are made for a woman who loves classic jewelry that lasts. I can’t wait to show them off!

How to appear less dead on a Monday morning at work

How to appear less dead on a Monday morning at work

Do you remember the scene in the movie “Frozen” when Anna woke up from bed? Her hair is a mess and she’s drooling? Yeah, I can totally relate to her because that’s what I struggle with it the morning and I’m glad no one’s around to see how many times I hit the snooze button. I almost fell asleep while writing this post because that’s how much I hate mornings. If you like your Monday morning face, you’re probably from another planet or a Disney princess. Here is a routine I came up with to appear less dead on a Monday morning at work.

1. Wash your face with cold water
I know it’s hard on a cold morning but resist the urge to use hot water and splash cold water on your face. It’ll wake you right up and don’t forget to use a refreshing cleanser with mint or green tea.

2. Use an undereye brightener
I don’t need to tell anyone that I’m a night owl because the evidence is showing right under my eyes. I use Ole Henriksen’s banana bright eye cream which makes it possible for me to pretend I love coming to work on a Monday.

3. Put on your favorite podcast or a tv show
I don’t mean CNN unless you want a reason to be angry about something inane. Whatever it is that will put you in a good mood or a smile on your face. One of my favorite videos that always makes me laugh is Dumb Ways to Die by Metro.

4. Drink or eat something sweet and energizing
An overly cold iced tea usually does it for me in the mornings but I found this recipe for the banana chia seeds toast and I thought I would switch the butter for a sinful amount of nutella…..or just shove a spoonful of nutella in my mouth before I leave.

5. Use a face mist or a perfume
As a final touch to my outfit before heading out to work, I like to spritz my favorite perfume or a face mist. Right now, I’m using Elizabeth Taylor’s white diamonds which is a classic scent that I love and this face mist has been my staple for a long time. It’s only 10 bucks and your coworkers will be wondering why you’re in such a good mood.

The beautiful necklace I’m obsessed with from Aurate NY

Sunday, April 22nd, 2018

I think jewelry is an important part of your outfit and I don’t personally feel complete unless I put on my favorite ring or a necklace. I love jewelry that is timeless, modern and elegant. But for a lot of girls, jewelry is expensive and something we can only admire from shop windows. Then one day, I discover a company called Aurate NY on instagram. At first, I was impressed by their beautiful pictures and then I dug a little bit more about how they made their pieces. All of their pieces are hand-made to perfection and they only use the finest and ethically sourced gold materials. And it comes with a lifetime guarantee. How cool is that?!

I wanted to buy everything on their website to be honest but I’ll have to wait until I have a millionaire boyfriend (haha!) but I set my eyes on this particular short gold bar drop necklace. I was so excited when it arrived in a beautifully wrapped box a few weeks later and immediately put it on. The gold color is gorgeous and it can pretty much go with any outfit I choose to wear whether it’s casual or fancy.

summer essentials from shopbopThere are a few things I look forward to in a year: Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s and Shopbop sales. It’s almost summer time and I’m in the mood to prance around in pretty dresses and sandals. My favorite essentials for warmer months include stripe dresses, straw bags, trendy sunglasses and light airy bralettes.

Here is something you cannot miss right now at Shopbop. They’re giving you 20% off on everything under $500.00 and 25% off on orders $500.00 and above. The sale includes full priced and sale items. Go there fast and grab as many as you can before your favorite things get sold out! Use the code EVENT18 at the checkout.

I just bought this cute little stripe dress! It goes perfectly with my straw bag with my rainbow keychain (It’s sold out unfortunately but you can get this ice cream one here!) and the Herschel Supply Co purse to put all my makeup in. I don’t have time for regular bras during hot months so eberjey bralettes are my preferred choice. I also have my eyes on this beautiful Native Gem necklace to add a bit of elegance to my outfits. Leopard print candle? Only Charlotte Olympia can make me splurge on one!

Let’s talk about shoes for a second. These flowery Tory Burch shoes are so pretty that I can stare at them forever. But what’s better than putting in my shopping cart with 20% off?! Don’t forget to put on a pair of chic sunnies if you’re planning to go to the beach girls! My go-to sunglasses are Le Specs because they’re so affordable and looks amazing on my face. Oh and it’s nice to read something good for your body like “Eat Beautiful“.

So there you have it! Get thee to the shopbop sale because it ends on April 14th!

3 stylish Tobi Pieces I can’t live without

Wednesday, April 4th, 2018

I’m kind of a sentimental person and my closet is full of items that I can’t seem to say good-bye to. Everytime I’m tempted to Marie Kondo my apartment, my closet will be the one I purposely ignore and I’ll happily let it overflow. But I make sure that when I add additional items to my growing collection, they are pieces that I’ll wear more than once.

Last weekend, I got three lovely pieces from Tobi that I’m obsessed with. First of all, rompers are one of my favorite things to wear. Half of my closet is just rompers in a variety of colors and prints. This black polka dot romper, in particular, has caught my eye and the bell sleeves bring the 70’s vibe. I paired it with my white sneakers and couldn’t stop swinging my sleeves around. It’s a perfect little romper that any girl would look cute in.

Another piece I love is the lace white skirt that can go from day to night easily. Lace is a classic trend that never goes out of style and I felt very feminine when I paired it with my favorite grey sweater. Plus the material is thick enough that it’s not see through!

And I wore this super cool sweater with lace-up sides to the beach because the material is thin enough to be comfortable and it’s definitely going to be something I can’t wait to wear again.

Tobi has so many affordable and stylish pieces for any girl who wants to look cute on a budget and it’s my go to place for finding pieces I don’t mind adding to my overflowing closet.
