Everytime I read an article telling me what essential wardrobe staples I need to have in my closet, they’re basically the same things. It makes sense that you need to have the little black dress, the white tshirt and the nude pumps in your arsenal but if you like to shop but want to save money at the same time, it’s hard to decide which pieces you want to add to your collection every season. However, if you have a uniform like me and you buy the same thing over and over again, it’s not a problem. For example, I like white silk button downs so I tend to splurge on them every month. It’s important to be thoughtful and deliberate before you make a purchase and ask yourself “Will I be wearing this in three months?” and “Will I be able to pair this piece in multiple ways with what I already have?”.
Personally, I like to spend my money on these ten basics in different styles and colors. (button-down shirts, knit sweaters, form-fitting dresses, leather skirts, jumpsuits, black pants/jeans, tailored jackets, nude heels/flats, statement clutch, and good underwear). You don’t need to buy all ten items every month but if you have a budget, it’s a good idea to invest in one or two things from this list consistently.
Make a list of the stores that have great basics and are affordable. Besides the usual stores that every girl knows like Zara and Jcrew, search the internet or polyvore to find something that suites your personal style. Some of my favorites are Aritzia, Massimodutti, and Modern Citizen.(Source: Button-Down Shirts: Striped Shirt, White Shirt, Grey Blazer, Black Dress, White Dress, All Clutches are from Clare V.)
