Feeling Pretty & Chic

Monday, November 14th, 2011

Hope everyone had a great weekend! Mine was pretty quiet and I spent the majority of my time studying. Sometimes, people would ask me what I do for fun and I would say blogging, learning photography and working out.
I watch tv on my computer (shows I like are Glee, Once Upon a Time and Grimm). But the thing that I would never spend my time doing is playing video games. I can’t think of any mindless hobby that gives you nothing in return. Okay, well, perhaps entertainment and I can understand if you want to play for an hour or two but I’m appalled at people who stay up all night playing or spend six or more hours doing that..it boggles my mind. You can spend that time reading a book or learning how to set up a blog or a business. I’m sorry but I have to say I associate losers with playing video games. I guess I just really hate them.

I’ve been reading your blog for a long time now and normally really enjoy your bright and cheerful look at fashion. But while I get that you have strong feelings about videogames I think to accuse people of being ‘losers’ just because they use a certain type of entertainment sounds like 80’s high-school name-calling. You’re usually such a positive writer, it really saddened me to read this – especially since I know plenty of very successful people who regularly play them. Is some-one who watches reality tv, or reads a book superior to someone who gets their entertainment elsewhere? For that matter, (speaking as someone who works PT in fashion and reads fashion blogs), how is spending free time reading about fashion trends any ‘better’? In the end, how someone relaxes at the end of the day is their own choice – and it seems a little sad to judge them as losers because it’s not your preferred activity.

    • Fashion Cappuccino says:

      Hi Laura,

First, I would like to thank you for your comment and you made a good point about how someone spends their own time is their choice and I completely agree with that. I’m not against playing video games and in fact, some video games are fun and provide a lot of entertainment and bonding between family and friends. However, I guess I should have clarify it more in my post that what I’m against are people who do it as their main hobby and they’re addicted to it. Like drugs. In my post, I said that I don’t understand how someone can play games for all night long or six or more hours straight. Yes, it’s their time and they can do what they want with it and like you said, lots of successful people play video games but in my experience, successful people are doing other things instead of playing video games. Now, I get it if you’re a rich guy and you have all the time in the world but very rarely I see a wealthy guy sitting in front of the computer wasting his hours on a game. There are way more interesting things to do than playing video games and yes, I do believe that other hobbies are superior than mindlessly pressing buttons on a controller and yelling “SCORE”. Videogames are incredibly addictive and I’ve seen a lot of people who would rather waste their time on a game than spending quality time on other things. To me, that is sad.
Please let me know the names of the successful people who play video games regularly? I would love to know what they do and how many hours they play? Again, I’m not talking about an hour or two of having fun. That’s totally cool. I’m talking about the losers who play it as if it’s the love of their life.

      Sincerely,
      Shin

      • Laura says:

I think we’re arguing different points here. You said that “I have to say I associate losers with playing video games/you could be setting up a blog or business.”
I agree with you in that yes, it can be very addicting, and you should practice everything in moderation; of course doing any hobby to the point where you are neglecting essential parts of your life such as work and socialisation is detrimental. We’ve all read the news articles about kids who got so addicted to those online games they starved themselves to death. That’s sad, of course, and a waste of a life. But I really don’t see the difference between playing a game for a few hours, and, say, reading a novel or watching a film. They’re all escapism, the only difference is that games are interactive. There are people who watch movies/tv shows obsessively, or read celebrity magazines and gossip websites whenever they have a minute of free time. We all have our hobbies/activities to wind down with, (personally, traveling, scuba diving and rock climbing, along with watching tv shows (Once upon a time is really sweet!) and yep, playing games) but while I wouldn’t enjoy reading celebrity news magazines, or watching reality tv shows, I don’t think less of people who do so, nor would I think it fair to call them names, even if they were spending hours on end doing so. As for the thought that they could be doing something useful like setting up a blog/business, well, isn’t that what hobbies are about? Giving you a break from work?

Seeing as how your blog up til now has been such a wonderful positive thing to read regularly, especially your sweet romance posts, I thought it was a huge shame that instead of leaving it at ‘I would never play videogames and don’t understand the appeal’, you had to add the ‘loser’ comment.

As for the successful people comment, I think you misunderstood me. When I said I know, I meant I know personally, not ‘know of’ in terms of famous successful people. I have friends in a variety of working fields who count gaming as a regular hobby, ranging from an ER surgeon to fashion photographers and police officers. They all earn a decent wage, have active social lives, but one of their major hobbies is playing videogames – not just the occasional wii game with their kids. Gotta admit I’ve never heard one of them yell ‘Score!’ yet 🙂 And my husband and I play regularly together, around his work and my vet degree/PT job.

        • Fashion Cappuccino says:

Hi Laura, again thank you for your thoughtful comment and I really enjoy reading it. I get your point but I stand by my comment that I still think people who play excessive amount of video games are losers. Again, the MAIN word I use here is excessive. Like people who smoke weed all day and do nothing. Those are the kind of people I’m calling losers here. I understand escapism and I have nothing against people who have respectable jobs like yourself and your friends and who don’t let videogames take over your life. For me, videogames are a waste of time and to be honest, I don’t often hear any extremely successful people saying they count video games as their major hobby. Unless they create videogames and make money. Yes, you can play videogames as entertainment and fun but as a hobby? Well, I guess we won’t agree on that one. As for the SCORE comment, you realize that I’m just using it as an example, right? 🙂
